Why METRO is Celebrating
International Credit Union Day
October 19, 2017.
October 19, 2017 is a very important day for METRO as this day marks the celebration of a very important establishment: the credit union. Credit Unions all over the world will commemorate the formation of these not‑for‑profit cooperatives on what is known as International Credit Union Day. As this day approaches, we reflect on the importance of credit unions in our everyday lives.
As not-for-profit financial cooperatives, credit unions offer the same services as other financial institutions, but with a people-first philosophy.
In 1924, Roy Bergengren, one of the architects of the credit union movement, reflected on what a credit union can do for people.
“The credit union is, in fact, a bridge,” Bergengren wrote in the inaugural issue of “The Bridge,” the official newsletter of the American credit union movement, which was then in its infancy. “It may be the bridge over which the tenant farmer travels the wide gap that separates him from ownership. It may be the way that opens the great land of opportunity to the wage worker, who finds his savings the ‘open sesame’ to broader possibilities for himself and his family.”
Twenty-four years later, in 1948, credit unions in America, and later around the world, began celebrating the philosophy and achievements of credit unions every year on the third Thursday in October as International Credit Union Day. This year’s theme is “Dreams Thrive Here.” It’s meant to serve as a reminder of how effective credit unions, like METRO, are at helping its members chase and achieve their biggest dreams in life.
METRO is honored to help our members daily in reaching their financial goals through higher rates of return on savings accounts, better rates on loans, and fewer and lower fees than other financial institutions. We also think social responsibility is important to help improve lives throughout our communities and beyond.
Our Credit Union staff and members have continuously banded together to support causes that are important. A recent example is our fundraising support for our fellow/sister credit union members affected by the recent tropical storms and hurricanes. We are also involved in volunteer efforts within our community. On Saturday, September 16th, fifteen METRO staff and family members participated in the “California Coastal Clean-Up Day” at Golden Hill Park. METRO was also an event sponsor.
International Credit Union Day is a great way to honor the credit union movement and show our appreciation to our members. We invite you to join us at any of our branches on October 19th to enjoy refreshments and a special giveaway at our annual Open House. See you then!
